The mechanisms of this “cointercalation reaction” are poorly understood and commonly accepted design criteria for graphite intercalation electrodes do not seem to apply. In addition, based on the calculated energy barriers of the Li, Na and K ions jumps between the sites in the graphite, it can be deduced that the larger radius ions more smoothly diffuse in the graphite.
